What if the Cup Bearer remembered? By Dr. Teena Mary Varghese
I was just reading through Genesis chapter 40 and this is something that caught my attention…
In spite of all that the cupbearer received from Joseph and in spite of seeing what happened to the chief baker, the Bible simply says in one verse,
“The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him” Genesis 40:23
Even in our lives many a times people or institutions who we think will remember us, do not do so, they forget us. The many places we expect help from may not give us what we need, many times most people do forget, but we see that Gods favor rested on Joseph.
The twist in the story
The next chapter (Genesis 41) begins by saying that the Pharaoh saw a dream two years later. We all know what happened later but I’m thinking of Joseph for those two years. He would have thought why the cupbearer didn’t remember him. Joseph didn’t make any attempts to remind the cupbearer. However, we know that, if the cupbearer had remembered Joseph, he would probably have gotten back to Potiphar’s household but God had different plans for him.
God’s plan was to make Joseph be a part of Egyptian and World history. Yes! When we too feel that we’re forgotten let’s remember that when Gods favor rests on us, no matter what the situation is or how long is the delay. He will bring us through! Amen!
Great and encouragement post Dr. Teena! Thanks for sharing!
